I am always looking for a cute and creative ways to display food and these cake sticks are perfect! I took a frosted three layer cake and essentially cut catering slices out of it.
This is how caterers manage to get 24 slices out of an 8 inch cake. What I love about this idea is that you get a lot of decorator mileage out of a simple cake. I used a decorated cake, but this is a perfect place for a simple cake covered in sprinkles or a store bought cake. You can just buy, cut, and throw on some quick decor and you’re done! How easy it that!!!
Here’s how I turned a cake into cute cake sticks. Start to square out the cake but cutting off the rounded edges this will get you a square shape. Then cut across at the inch mark. You will make additional cuts perpendicular to that cut for your first 6 pieces. Place on serving dish. Next, you will move up another inch to make your third cut. Cut perpendicular to that cut to make the next six pieces. Repeat this pattern until the cake is completely cut. These are 1×1 slices. You can also make 1×2 pieces. Here is a handy guide to cut slight larger pieces.
cutting tips
- Sharpen your knife. Sharp knives are safer and they offer cleaner cuts.
- The secret to perfect cuts is a clean knife. I run the knife under hot water and wipe it with a paper towel after each cut. This keeps the frosting from bleeding onto other pieces.
- Use a small sized spatula or an offset spatula to life the cake onto your serving dish. This Cut and Serve Turner from OXO is my absolute favorite. It is perfect for corners and super small pieces.
