Cinnamon Sugar Mini Donuts

Mini Donuts! Yes, please.

Sometimes you just need a little indulgence. And nothing says indulgent like hot donuts dipped in glazed and covered in kicked up cinnamon sugar. Here we add allspice, nutmeg, and ginger to traditional cinnamon sugar to give the donuts a ton of flavor in each bite.

These are easy to make. Unlike yeast doughnuts which take a bit of effort to get right, these are as simple as sifting and stirring batter.

Equipment

  • Mini donut maker

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • vegetable oil for frying

Cinnamon Sugar

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Glaze, optional

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat oil to 350° or preheat mini donut maker. Grease donut maker with oil or shortening.
  • In a small, flat dish mix sugar, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and ginger. Set aside.
  • Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until smooth. Set aside.
  • Whisk oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract together until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg together. Whisk lightly to combine.
  • Gently stir wet ingredients into flour mixture scraping down sides until just combined
  • Add dough to a piping bag and cut the tip around a half inch from the tip. Pipe dough into wells of donut maker or directly into hot oil. Do not overcrowd pan or oil may overflow. Fry, turning once, for 3 minutes or until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  • Dip donuts into glaze. Allow excess to roll off. Toss donuts into cinnamon sugar. Serve.

Tools for the job

I used a mini donut maker similar to this one to make these donuts. You can also use a donut pan like this one. If you chose to fry the donuts, then opt for a heavy bottomed pan like cast iron for even frying. Once the donuts start to brown on the bottom, then flip them over and finish frying the other side.

Who doesn’t love a donut tower. I used a straw to hold this one up!

Serving

Mini donuts are incredibly versatile. You can serve them plain; with either the cinnamon sugar, or glaze; or dipped in caramel or chocolate.

Storage

Who am we kidding? There won’t be any leftovers! LOL
